Why You Should Backup Your Microsoft | Dropbox | Google Cloud Data.
With a primary focus on maintaining their infrastructure and services, Microsoft provides resilient infrastructure for cloud solutions. In spite of this, it does not mean that your data is fully protected.
The End User Agreement for Microsoft’s cloud services (and most other public cloud services) makes the user, not the provider, ultimately responsible for protection of their data.
There are many scenarios that can result in lost data.
If you accidentally delete something it will generally remain in a Recycle Bin or Deleted Items folder only for a certain amount of time. If you need to retrieve anything that was deleted some time ago you will most likely be out of luck.
Accounts are typically removed due to a user moving on. Data tied to a deleted user may not be recoverable unless it was moved elsewhere prior to account deletion.
Sometimes user make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes are not discovered for some time. By the time the error is discovered the lost data may well be unrecoverable.
A user may choose to deliberately delete data to cover their tracks or if they have malicious intent towards the company. If the loss is not detected promptly the data may not be recoverable.
A phishing attack on a user could lead to a ransomware attack requiring a point in time recovery of data. Microsoft does not offer point-in-time recovery.
Outages are rare but they do happen and are on the public record.
